Which university network do I connect to?

Western is undergoing a massive infrastructure upgrade to all facets of its network, wireless and data service systems as part of the large Board of Regents Network Convergence project occurring throughout the Connecticut State School system. Below is a list of the networks that will be deployed over this semester and will be available for use by the respective, intended recipients.

Wireless Network Names (SSID):

  • Western (Open Network): This is and will continue to be Western’s Guest access network for all users of the campusPlease be aware that this access times out after a period of time. You will be required to accept the usage policy at logon time .

  • Western-Student (Open Network): This is a new network that is designed to replace “ResNet” in all the residence halls and now will be available all over the campus instead of just the residence halls. This allows students to register their device once and have ubiquitous access everywhere at Western. You will be required to accept the usage policy for all devices registered.

  • Western-Staff (Secured Network): This is a new network that is designed for university staff members to use university owned devices securely anywhere on campus.

  • Western-Faculty (Secured Network): This is a new network that is designed for university faculty members to use university owned devices securely anywhere on campus.

  • Western-BYOD (Secured Network): This is a new network that is designed for student, faculty and staff users to connect to the wireless network securely with their own personally owned devices. This will require the device to be enrolled in a security service and managed and you will be required to accept a usage policy.

  • Western-Eduroam (Open Network): This network provides visiting ConnSCU and other participating universities in the Eduroam program. (For details please see - https://www.eduroam.us ) All users will be required to accept the Western and Eduroam acceptable use policy.

  • WestConn-SECURE (Secured Network): This network is still active but is in the process of being retired in favor of Western Staff and Western Faculty to enhance security. This network will be decommissioned, once all known devices using it are migrated to one of the other networks.

  • WestConn-ITI (Secured Network): This network is still active but is in the process of being retired in favor of Western Staff to enhance security. This network will be decommissioned, once all known devices using it are migrated to one of the other networks.
